Does anyone know of a way of doing a checkup...?

Answers:
Nope, afraid not. Not only are we checking for cavities when we look at your teeth but --- how you bite, the condition of your oral tissues, we take measurements to evaluate the gum tissues and xrays as needed. We are also reviewing your health status and oral homecare methods. It would be convenient to be able to do this from home, but honestly I can't even clean all of my own teeth with my instruments the way I do for my patients. I would need to be Houdini!

Not unless you're a dentist. Among other things you need a check up so your dentist can keep an eye out for oral cancer. If it's left for 5 years you have a 50% chance of survival. That's a good reason for 6 monthly check ups.
