Just had a ceramic filling. Do you know if...?

First filling ever so I'm all weirded out.

It feels rough. Not sharp, just rough, like really fine sandpaper. Normal? will it smooth out?

I've spit out a couple little sandy grains that come off on my tongue when I rub the edges of my tooth. is that OK?

Is there some amount of time before I can eat again? What about Coke - will it stain it if I have one now?

Does it act like a regular tooth surface? can I still bite just as hard, will it stain faster or slower?

Is there any chance it will fall out or anything?

Should I use antiseptic mouthwash before or after I brush my teeth?

Answers:
Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years and it is not uncommon for the filling to feel rough if he did not polish it. Some dentists do, some don't as it will wear smooth in a few days or more. It it does not, call your dentist and have it smooth if off with a diamond burr. Second, you can eat immediately, the filling is completely "cured" and is as hard as it will ever get. Coke will not stain, but keep up good oral hygiene habits to avoid any additional cavities. It will not stain if the materials were mixed together properly and has a closed margin. So do not worry. All fillings always have a possibility of falling out. It is the nature of the beast. But most do not. So the percentages are in your favor. Please stop worrying and just enjoy your life. The fillings are a common procedure done all day long and I have only had a very few that fell out or broke in the first few years. So relax, forget about it and if the roughness still bothers you have your dentist smooth it off, it takes only a few seconds! If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie
