Hi! Listen and calm down. Take a breath and relax. The swelling can last for days. THIS is NORMAL. So listen to me. Keep the ice packs on and try this.
You may be more sensitive then most, this a good thing for some things, bad for this. But this too shall pass. Sleep with an extra pillow like I told you. Then, open your mouth half way and masage your jaw with your finger pad, not tips with your nail. Do circular motions. Then apply a covered ice pack. Tomorrow chew sugarless gum. Open your mouth like you want to yawn and massage again. Apply ice packs. Now, the best part. AND only if you brush after wards. Very gently. Eat lollipops. This moves your tongue and jaw and gets the circulation going. Sugarless hard candies rolling around your mouth work also. The idea is to get the jaw in motion with your tongue. This will reduce the swelling as the blood supply moves into the jaw to heal and the swelling reduces. Keep putting on the ice packs for 10-20 minutes, rinse with salt water and in 3 days you should be back to normal or close to it. If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie.
i got my wisdom teeth out a few years ago and i didn't have swelling anywhere near that bad. give the dentist a call tomorrow, it can't hurt.
Well, if the pain is unbearable I would go to the ER. I wouldn't wait to call the dentist. If the pain is bearable, then I guess you can wait. My husband had his teeth pulled and was in so much pain and swollen he was near tears. He went to the ER and helped with the pain until he could see the dentist again.
Anyway, it sounds like you are pretty concerned about this, so you could call the hospital and ask them if they think you should come in to the ER. Other then that, I don't really know what other advice to give. I tried to search the net for answers about your problem but came up with nothing. I hope you feel better!
How long ago was your surgery? Swelling usually peaks on about the 2nd or 3rd day after. If the pain in your lower sockets seems to be getting worse, feels like a bad throbbing earache it could be a dry socket. Dry sockets can be treated with a dressing to help keep them comfortable until your own tissue lines the bare bone at the bottom of the extraction site. After the 1st 24 hours I don't know how much good ice bags will do for swelling. To help the jaw muscles, sometimes ice bags followed by moist heat will help the pain and help to relax the jaw muscles. I agree with Marie that gentle massage helps. I've never heard about using lollipops, but maybe this is something new! I would think that stimulating the jaw muscles too early will prolong the healing. Again, I don't know how long it's been since your surgery...
