Wisdom Teeth Removal!?
Question:
Answers:
ok its really not as bad as everyone says it is. first you go to the office and get signed in, then they call you and bring you into the room. it looks like just a regular dentists chair. then they give you a shot int he arm and before 10 seconds your asleep. it just feels like regular sleep thats it. when you wake up its done, and you have gauze in your mouth, which you can take out after a little while. the pain isnt bad, they give you painkillers for the first couple days. the face will be puffy but its nothing you cant handle. its not that bad just be calm and you will be ok
I refused to have mine removed and they are doing just fine. My co-worker's grandpa who was a dentist told me not to let any other dentist talk me into getting them removed or filled.
I had my wisdom teeth pulled when I was 18, all four. I was put to sleep. the worst part was the IV for me. I did swell a little bit but had no pain after, plus they give you pain medicine. I did cry coming out of the anesthetic, but that is my usual response. I went home and took a nap and went to the mall that night with my boyfriend! No problem. Mine weren't all completely out either, they had to really go after one or two but still no major issues.
Well I had two out but at different times. If they are puting you out with anesthesia you'll be greatful. When you come out of anesthesia you may not feel much in pain because of all drugs you're on. Your mouth will have open sockets that requires clamping down on gauze until the bleeding stops. Nowadays, they might even be cauterizing which stops the bleeding all together. You face won't be very puffy and the results are far better than before when you couldn't close your mouth properly or are chomping on your cheeks. You'll be fine!!
to calm your nerves... this is just something that has to be done! its now or later! my dr. gave me valium to take before the surgery to calm my nerves. anesthia will knock u out! you will sit in the chair and when you open your eyes next it will be done!! you will be a little pufffy and maybe a bit bruised around jawline. good luck and don't worry! thank goodness you are doing all 4 at once!
You do nothing to get ready, but hope your surgeon doesn't slip like mine did and end up costing you $8000 to get an artery sealed off.
The worst part about dental disasters is that you sign a waiver that writes off everything including death.
In my case, an investigation was opened with the state dental board since something went wrong but they stretched the case out over a 2 year period and never came to a conclusion, or at least said they couldn't legally tell me what happened, and they didn't punish the surgeon at all. I think they thought it was funny that I got screwed.
If your in Ohio the surgeon that slaughtered me was a John. Santin DDS, don't go there!
There's nothing to be scared of. When I had mine out, I opted for local anesthetic (puts you to sleep) instead of staying awake for it. Make sure to bring someone (friend, parent, etc) who can drive you home afterward. When you wake up you will feel a little groggy and your jaw will ache in a couple hours or so when the drugs from your IV start to wear off but they will give you a prescription for strong painkillers; usually about a weeks worth. Just take them as needed for the pain and you will be fine. Most people can be back to work or school or whatever the next day if they want. I personally took a few days off work and stayed home but you don't need to do that. You will be fine.
Your dentist or oral surgeon should be able to provide you with pre-op instructions. The anestesia (unless you are having something stronger) is just a shot into your gums to numb you. 3 years ago I had all 4 pulled and did just fine. Your face won't be puffy, but you'll be numb so you may feel like it is. It's not too bad, really. I drove myself home, took one Vicodin and slept through the worst part of the pain. You'll be ok. Don't worry too much, people do this every single day.
It seems that everyone has a different experience with these types of things. Personally, I literally slept for a week afterward. My sister drove herself back to work as soon as they released her.
It does seem common though that there will be some bruising and some pain. I have to say though that a lot of the end result depends on the surgeon.
I wish you all the best!
The best thing is to talk to your dentist about anything he can give you for your nerves. If you have a good dentist he will not mind explaining to you step by step what he is about to as he is getting ready to do the next step, to put your nerves at ease.
My sister, brother and I had our wisdom teeth pulled out when we were 6, 8, & 10 (getting ready for braces).
I was the oldest and went in first, I do not remember a thing except waking up with my dad next to my chair.
All went well for all of us, minor pain and only one day of mild swelling. We did not have to take any prescription medication, Tylenol was all that was needed for the pain.
Age does not matter much either, when my dad had his wisdom teeth pulled he did so well he drove himself home and went to work two hours after he had them pulled.
It is just your nerves making it seem worse than it really is but when it is all over you will wonder what you were so anxious about.
talk to your dentist about oral sedation. in the end you'll be glad you did. at the office i work at we offer it to pts and it totally relaxes them..
