When I went thru having braces, they said something about having my frenum lasered because it was too "long" or something like that. I never did have any troubles like you are explaining but that is the only thing I can relate is I know what you are talking about, but they might want to laser it depending on if if is getting in the way and causing you discomfort. The frenum can pull/tug at the tissue of your upper (or lower) lip, causing teeth to NOT come together (in some cases) while wearing braces.
They could be purple in color due to the brackets, however if you're genuinely concerned, call your dentist.
I"m not a dentist, but your orthodontist probably referred you to an oral surgeon to have the frenum "removed" or taken care of, so it won't interrupt of ruin your treatment process with ortho. Sometimes a frenum can "undo" what the goal is with ortho.
Make an appointment so you can sleep tonight. But if your dentist had concerns of the frenum being something serious, they would have let you know.
