This is called bruxism. He may need a custom mouth guard to wear while he sleeps. The mouth guard takes the punishment that his teeth would normally endure during his bruxism. This will minimize the damage associated with bruxism.
Additionally, his dentist can help him properly position his teeth and tongue so as to reduce his bruxism. Reducing alcohol intake is also advisable since alcohol has been shown to worsen bruxism. It is now well known that stress and anxiety play the major role in causing bruxism. If this is severe, he should see his doctor.
take him to the dentist where they will take an impression of his teeth and fit him for a mouth-gard. My dad had the same issue.
Extraction!
There is a device that they sell at the drug store. It is called the Doctor's Night Guard. Your boyfriend would fit it to his mouth and wear it at night. It would prevent that horrible grinding sound and save his teeth.
Mouth guard! but he should see his dentist for advice.
Just left him and he will grit his fingers instead.
This is very common. I would say it is close to 90% of people Brux their teeth at night or even during the day. We are all just a bunch of stressed out people I guess..lol.
I now recommend to my patients the NTI appliance. It is small, fits onto the 4 center teeth (top or bottom). It has to be made for you by the dentist. Not all dentists know about this appliance. You can look it up on http://www.nti-tss.com/
These are not cheap appliances. If you can in no way afford something like this your only other option would be a night guard from the dental section in your favorite store (wal-mart, target, etc.) or an athletic guard. Both of these are soft and you have to put them in hot water and bite slightly into them. They do not fit as well or as comfortably, but it will keep him from wearing the teeth and keeping you awake. Good luck.
you should probally get him a personalized mouth guard
