How does a canker sore heal?

Question:

I have a canker sore underneath my mouth on top of one of the veins. It's turning into what appears to be a small scab, ready to fall off with time. Is this part of the process? My canker sore was/is big. Can it be other thing than a canker sore? I have read that it can't be a oral herpes because they only appear in boned area surfaces such as lips, gums, and outer mouth structures. And far as I know canker sores appear inside the mouth on soft tissues, such as the tongue. But what worries me is that it's on a vein.
