Is is better to have your tooth pulled or get the root canal? Which is more painful? Which is more costly?

In the long run, having a root canal would be the best option. If you pull the tooth, yes, you will save money. But you will need to eventually either get an implant to replace the extracted tooth, or perhaps some sort of bridge. I'd go with the root canal. You dental insurance should cover much of the cost. The most painful part of a root canal for me has been some stiffness/pain in the jaw for a couple days. It's mainly due to my TMJ issues.
It depends on how badly you want to save your tooth. They both involve some pain. Having a root canal is definitely more costly.
Having your tooth pulled is cheaper, but it would hurt more. They are both done with you very numbed up, and you will feel some discomfort after both procedures, but pain meds will take care of it. If you get it pulled, eventually you will have to get a bridge to replace it, which is costly. so in the long run, getting a root canal is a better option.
The root canal is more costly but less painful.
I had a root canal done a few yrs back and had no pain at all but that could be different considering what dentist you go to.
If you have insurance then I would go with the root canal but that is just me... Having a tooth pulled just sounds so painful.
I've had a tooth pulled and I've had a root canal. Getting a tooth pulled is something I would only consider if it was my very back molar and I once had a molar pulled from the back. It's less expensive to get a tooth pulled (when I had it done it was around $500 because I went to an oral surgeon) and the recovery, for me at least, was more painful than a root canal.

The root canal, on the other hand, is around $1,400 for everything. That will vary from state to state and depending on your dentist, but that's what mine charged me. I don't think they're all that painful and you'll have a little bit of discomfort but it's not as bad as it sounds. I'm fortunate to have a dentist that I'm comfortable enough with that I'll take a nap while he's working on me.

Good luck!
both are painful . You will need a needle for pain relief..
Root canal work is more expensive because it's a procedure that's done over a few days.. Most dentist will encourage you to keep your tooth rather than having it removed.
Hi there.
With modern medication neither should be too painful.

Root canal is more expensive and takes much longer.

Remember root canal doesnt always work either..its difficult to fill the very tips of the root and bacteria can survive.

I know this from both sides of the arguement. I'm a dentist plus I learnt the hard way with a tooth myself..that another dentist treated I hasten to add!

A root canalled tooth is effectively dead, it will in time turn a darker colour and weaken and probably need crowning.

If you have sufficient other teeth around it I'd pull it
You need a root canal if it is very infected
Put it this way. If you can not afford a crown after a root canal, getting a root canal is a waste of your money and you might as well pull the tooth. (Depending where the tooth is located in your mouth.)

It will be a little bit of an investment for a root canal & crown, but it is the best way to treat your situation. Yes, it is cheaper just to pull the tooth, however.
