How can you stop the swelling from wisdom teeth removal?
Question:
I've had them out for 3 days now and I want to know if there is any thing I can do that would help the pain go faster?
I know I need to give them 5 days to heal but I was just wondering if anyone had home remedies that help with the pain?
Answers:
Hi! Been in dentistry over 25 years. Ice packs and rinsing with warm salty water 3-4 times a day. Sleep with another pillow and don't eat anything that is hot, spicy or hard to chew or sticky. Take our pain meds as the dentist told you!!
If you had used ice packs for 20 minutes every hour the first day this would not be so bad. So lets go from here. Get the ice packs on now! Then do this. Slowly open you mouth like you want to yawn. Then VERY gently massage the jaw. This will break up the fluid and make the muscle less tight and reduce the swelling, then apply ice packs again for 15 minutes. Do this 4-5 times a day. You will see a huge difference in 1 day. Keep this up, but remember, open mouth just until it is tight, massage in circles and then ice.
After 2 more days, try this. Chew sugarless gum. This will also loosen the muscle and then apply an ice pack for 10-15 minutes. The swelling should all be gone in 2-3 days. If you do this right, you will be fine. Remember, gentle, you are not pounding on flesh, just round gentle circles with your flat of the fingers. No poking. If you have any other questions, please ask. I will try to help you. And don't forget the salty rinse before bed, that is the most important!! Marie
VICODIN!! and ICE!
