Is a Root Canal Painful and How long does it take?

Question:

Answers:
I work for an endodontist, a dentist that specializes in root canals.

How long the procedure takes greatly depends on your tooth and your root structure. If you have curved roots for example, it can take longer so the endodontist gets all the pulp out of the root. Then filling the root can take some time too.

On average, they take about 60-90 minutes from the time you get into the chair and leave. That includes all the x-rays that need to be taken and time for the local anesthetic to kick in.

A root canal is absolutely NOT painful at all, if you go to a qualified dentist or endodontist. Our patient's biggest complaint is that they are bored.

If you use a good dentist, it should not hurt. My dentist uses the injections and gas. While he is working you notice movement in your mouth, but no pain. I have only had one root canal and it was a breeze. I have a sister who had one and she was in agony. My suggestion is use a dentist you trust.
It's murder in a chair.
NEVERbut NEVER have root canal work done! half the time it's only temporary at best and agonizingly painful ! My opinion is that root canal work is designed only to enrich dentist. I hope you will take my word for this it's a expierence you don't want!
No it is not painful. The dentist will freeze the tooth first so that you feel no pain. They will then drill into the tooth, and use reamers (small files) to remove the nerve from the tooth. The channels where the nerves were are then sealed with a plastic plug. The tooth can then be filled to look normal. The whole procedure depends on how many roots are in the tooth, your front teeth have only one root canal, others can have 3. The whole procedure is normally done over 2 sessions and xrays are taken at various stages to eb=nsure that all of the nerve has been removed and there is no abcess remaining.
