I've no clue. But this I do know: About 90% of 6th graders chew their tongues. I teach in a school that has a "No Gum" policy, and just about every time I say, "Get rid of that gum," the little darlin' will answer, "I ain't got no gum. I'm chewing on my tongue."
When I would say, "If you're chewing on your tongue that hard, I'd better see some blood," somehow, mysteriously, they would be cured of their tongue-chewing habit. Ah, the miracles that occur daily in America's classrooms! I, too, have witnessed the wonder of it all.
No clue! I guess it is something that you just do. Like a nervous habit. Pretty crazy!
To the teacher, you can chew on your tongue loud enough to make it sound like you are chewing gum, and have there be no blood. It is possible.
