Can i be a dentist if i am not comfortable with blood?
Question:
plz speak from experience
Answers:
Seeing blood, etc. is not something to be overly concerned with if you wish to become a dentist. When I was in school, we had a few guys passing out during first year and they all went on to graduate. You learn to disassociate yourself from the patient. As for the vomiting thing that the preceding writers are so adamant to comment on...in over 30 years of practice, I've had maybe 2 throw up so that's not a big deal [besides, your assistants cleans that up!]. If dentistry is your heart's desire then go for it. I wanted to be a dentist in the second grade and made it come true.
You need to be able to handle blood, vomit and other things in order to be a dentist as you will see blood in the mouth as well as people with rotten teeth from years of avoiding the dentist. People with poor gag reflex will vomit as you work on them so try seeing if you can figure out how to overcome your problems before you think of dental school.
when you begin dental school you need to take a class that requires you to work with cadavers, (dead people).
if your ok with that then your good to go.
Yes, it is something that be overcome. I'm in nursing school, and I'm getting used to all sorts of things that I thought were really gross.
My dad is a dentist and my mum is a dental hygenist and they are both fine with blood but I'm like you I hate it!
If you want to be a dentist you will have to get used to the sight of blood. It's everywhere! Vomit as well, because some patients are so scared they get sick on you and the blood usually comes with it. Dentistry is not for the faint hearted! You could probably overcome the blood thing in time, but you should go on a practice course or something to see how you feel working in peoples mouthes!
I never liked blood but once i started doing hygiene. well i just got numb to it, you get use to it.
You will get used to it. There are always going to be dental students who faint in the oral surgery clinic the first time or two, but they get over it. If you really hate the sight of blood, maybe you will continue and become an orthodontist where there is pretty much no blood to deal with. This is what got you interested in dentistry in the first place.
