I certainly hope that your dentist doesn't prescribe you vicodin, that's extremely addictive. They should prescribe you antibiotics (if there is an infection) and tylenol 3 (which has codeine).
Possibly. However, the pain meds are not what you need. You need antibiotics to get rid of the infection which is causing the pressure and the pressure receptors are what is causing the pain b/c teeth do not have pain receptors. Once the antibiotics reduce the infection the pain will reduce greatly. Your dentist might give you a few pain pills to help for the first 24-48 hours until the antibiotics begin to work.
If your dentist is a good dentist he will fix the problem that is causing the pain. Once the problem is fixed he will decide if you will need pain medicine.
