Question:
I have dry socket and have had gauze changed by the dentist a few times. Since it was the weekend, he gave me gauze to apply myself, but when I went to get the old gauze out, I just cannot seem to do so. It almost seems like the clot is back covering the hole, so I do not want to disturb it if it is, but I also need to get the gauze out somehow. The dentist is not in on Sunday, so I will have to wait until Monday to see him. I am afraid that it is healing around the gauze and what kind of complications that could have. I am wanting to put the new gauze on also because it has medication on it that soothes the pain, but most importantly, I am afraid of the gauze being stuck in there and the dentist having to hurt me more by trying to get it out later. Is it possible to cause an infection if I leave it in too long? Will the new clot grow around it, causing problems later on? Just worried and I have no way to talk to the dentist until tomorrow.

You didn't say if you were still having pain. If not, then you are OK to just leave the dressing in there until you see your dentist again as it doesn't have to be changed. I'm thinking you are OK since the dressing has already been changed a couple of times, so don't worry about it [the gauze acts as a clot]. Unless there's some dressing sticking up out of the socket it's going to be very difficult for you to remove without some sort of bent tweezers but the socket isn't healing up over the gauze.
you need to remove it, your supposed to change the gauze whenever it starts to disintegrate. Leaving it on all the time and not changing it won't help, also if you've stopped bleeding you no longer need the gauze. You need to be extremely careful of what you eat and drink though. you definatly need to change is now though. It's not healthy to keep it there.
It will help to remove the gauze if you kind of swish your mouth with warm salt water until the gauze is moist and the clock dissolves a little bit. Good luck.
Go see a Dentist, there has to be somone oncall somewhere.
