Swallowing large amounts of toothpaste that contains fluoride WILL make you ill. A child can die if they eat a tube of toothpaste. The fluoride in the toothpaste converts to hydrofluoric acid in the stomach and is toxic. If some is swallowed and you get an upset stomach, have a glass of milk. Emergency treatment for a child is needed if they ingest large amounts. The calcium binds to the acid and renders is harmless. Young children that have too much fluoride can develop white staining on their adult teeth.
