Can mouthwash cause canker sores?

Question:
I've only had canker sores as a child, now I am 25 and been dealing with four of them that started at the same time. The only thing different I can think of is the new Crest mouthwash I've been using. But I don't think that mouthwash could do it. But also i've read that they're not contagious so where'd I get them and why all at once? Any ideas?

Answers:
I went to the dentist a few years back and my entire mouth broke out in canker sores. It got so bad I had to go to the doctor and get antibiotics and numbing mouth wash. I'll have you know I've since not been back to the dentist!

I'm not sure if mouth washes themselves cause canker sores but they can indeed make them worse. Don't use an alcohol based mouth wash like Listerine. I was told by my doctor to use Biotene. It's very gentle and tastes like peppermint. It is a bit on the expensive side though. I have since switched to Crest Pro Health and haven't had any troubles. Also, don't use a toothpaste with 'sodium lauryl sulfate' as this ingredient can cause canker sores. Almost every single major toothpaste uses this ingredient but there are some out there that are sodium lauryl sulfate free. Rembrandt Extra Gentle being one that is great, but like Biotene a bit expensive ($7 a tube at my local Rite Aid). I have been able to use Arm & Hammer toothpaste, which has sodium lauryl sulfate as an ingredient, but doesn't cause any problems. I have found Aquafresh to be the most irritating.

It is also possible to spread canker sores to others, as they are a form of herpes (herpes simplex type 1 to be exact) so be careful!

I hope the information I have provided you is useful.
Canker sores are usually caused by stress and are viral. Normally, its takes 7 to 10 days for them to clear up. Ask your dentist what you can take for them. I think its called Lysine, which you can buy otc.
u can wash ur mouth with mouthwash or peroxide it makes them sting less or the best bet would be too..

put 2 pinches of salt and cold water in a cup and swish it around in ur mouth it makes it hurt less
i dont thinnk it should unless youre allergic to it..try this: buy sterisol from your drugstore its an antibacterial mouthwash and rinse with it like 2-3 times a day for a few days and the sores WILL start to get better
i use it all the time and i know that if i feel something hurting in my mouth, its time to find the sterisol
hope this helps
also, stay away from pop, chcolate, salty foods, and citrus fruits and tomatoes
