Braces - Biting down?

Question:
I got my braces today and I have problems biting down on anything. People say this is because the orthodontist does not want me to bite down on the brackets because I might break them.

If that is true, when will I be able to bite?
and will biting down later still be subject to breaking my braces?

Answers:
i believe i have the exact same problem as you. i have a HUGE overbite, so the bottom brackets would fit. thus, i had to get top one for about 9 months, to make space for the bottom. unfortunately, when they put on the bottom, there was still not enough space so i kept biting down on them. the orthodontist knew of this problem, so he used this machine [i have no idea what its called] to alter the bracket so i wouldnt bit it. to sand it down? im trying to think of the right words, but they arent coming to me. haha. anyway, after about 2 weeks, i could bit all the way down. perhaps you should go back to your orthodontist and see if there is anything they can do. maybe a bite plate? i havent had one, but ive heard of them. good luck.
you teeth are probably just resting atop the braces. i had/have the same problem. youll get used to it.
woah hold up
if u got ur braces u shouldnt be biting down!
it is prob hurting alot but i think u should go easy on ur meal choices cuz i ate lo mein the day i got them!
good luck w/ ur braces!!
since you just got your braces on the cement isnt completely dried yet. therefore, biting down might cause them to break off. and tomorrow your teeth are going to be hurting so you prolly wont be eating any hard foods for a while. as long as you arnt biting down on something hard (ice, jollyrancher) then youll be fine later on.
well it depends if youll damage your braces or not...if you haeva deep overbite your ortho may have glued in 2 small wedges of plastic behind your front teeth to actually prevent you from biting down too far and biting off your barces on the bottom...youll be able to bite when 1. your mouth stops hurting 2. you re-learn how to eat
it was sooooooo weird eating the first few days after i got mine..its like you have to learn to chew different. dont worry you will get used to it
its fine to bite down, if you had those lttile plastic wedges installed then yeah its absolutly fine because they are whats preventing you from breaking the brackets, and dont worry about breaking the wedges because they are VERY strong, ive never broken them. but still, to make sure the stay intact try not to eat the common foods that orthodontists dont recommend with braces
since it sounds like you have an overbite and possibly quite a deep one, if he/she gives you elastics later on, make sure you wear them ALL the time! if you dont, youll just drag out the treatment time
The same thing happened to me. After a while you will get so used to it, you wont even notice. I'm pretty sure the orthodontist will prevent you from breaking your braces because that means more work for them! Good luck!
Well when i first got my braces i had the same problem and you shouldnt really bite down on anything, what im trying to say is eat really soft food for like the first day and then by sunday you should be able to bite down on anything.
I had the same problem when I got my braces. The reason you can't bite down now is because (I'm assuming) your teeth are sore, so you can't bite down hard enough to chew the food. My molars don't meet with each other, but I'm able to eat food completely normally now. Wait about a week and you should be able to eat normally. Ask your parents to take you to a grocery store and get some soft foods like pudding, applesauce, mac n' cheese, ice cream, jello, peanut butter, and other foods that don't require much chewing and eat that until you can handle harder foods. It sucks the first week, but I promise, it gets better.
