How long is too long for braces?

Question:
I have had them for 4 1/2 years now. I am losing my mind!!!

Answers:
I'd say you may be to the point where braces can no longer do what is needed. You may have to have jaw surgery. Has that been mentioned at all to you as a possibility? Wearing braces for several years makes you very susceptible to decay and gum problems. You may consider getting another opinion.
Well its better then having them all your life, bit they say the earlier you get treatmennt the better.
That seems quite long. How do your teeth look? Do they seem straight now? Have you talked to the orhtodontist to see how much longer he thinks it will take?
I AGREE WIT NANCY S... HAVIN THEM IN FOR TOO LONG IS NOT HEALTHY AND CAN ALSO BURN THE ROOTS ON UR TEETH WHICH MAY CAUSE THEM TO FALL OUT SOONER THAN THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO. U NEED TO ASK UR ORTHODONTIST HOW MUCH LONGER DOES HE ESTIMATE BC U MAY INDEED JUST NEED SURGERY IF BRACES OR RUBBERBANDS CANT HELP. REGULAR TREATMENT SHOULD RANGE ANYWHERE FROM 6 MOS TO 2-2 1/2 YRS, BUT 4 1/2 YRS? SEEMS A LIL TOO LONG FOR ME... =/
