Tongue thrust appliance?

Question:
i am going to have to get a tongue thrust appliance, and i have heard that they have little spikes on them that poke your tongue when you swallow, is this true..is it really going to hurt that bad(spikes)???

Answers:
There are different types of appliances. I also have a tongue thrust and the dentist put tongue shields on my retainer. This could be an option for you if you already have a retainer. However, there is an appliance that consists of small spikes and is is placed on the back of your bottom teeth. I had a friend who had this appliance and she said that it didn't hurt that bad. It quickly trained her not to thrust her tongue and the only real downside was that she sounded funny when she talked. I would just talk to your dentist/orthodontist about your concerns and discuss the options. Good luck
