Dentist work on tooth is discolouring?

Question:
i'm 18. 5 years ago, i had this stuff on my front tooth that had to be sanded off. my dentist put the same stuff for fillings on this tooth. At first, the colour was roughly the colour of my teeth, but now its progressively turning more yellow. my teeth cleaning habits are good. is there something i can do to stop this?

Answers:
Your best option is to have it replaced as the newer composite (resin) materials are more color stable. The filling material will pick up stain from the things you eat and drink (coffee, tea, soda, wine, smoking, etc) so it is best to minimize those habits. This is probably what has happened to it. If you are drinking a dark beverage you can use a straw to help bypass those teeth. Also, if you do get it redone and you are thinking about whitening them you will want to whiten first and do the filling second. That way the new filling matches the lighter tooth color. Insurance will usually cover the replacement of the old filling about every 3 years.
Hope that helps!
