Been wondering why this happened. Anesthesia (put under) reaction?

Question:

I had to be put under for a tooth extraction ,and for some reason when I was brought out of the anethesia,and woke up I started fighting,and waving my arms everywhere. Why did that happen. I felt awful about that,and don't know what triggered that reaction. I have never reacted like that before. Did something startle me ,or what ?

Answers:
Most people come out of anesthesia doing one of 2 things - crying uncontrollably or are very violent. It is not abnormal and they are usually prepared for it. It is just your bodies way of reacting to it.

I bet they see this kind of reaction all the time. Sounds pretty funny! Hey and don't feel bad. You already been through enough pain. Enjoy the medicine and the rest.

This was a reaction to the anesthesia. My husband works in post anesthesia care unit, this happens quite often. I am sure you feel awful about this situation, but I can assure you, you are not the first person this has happened to nor will you be the last.

I think it is just a normal response for feeling disoriented, which is scary especially when you wake up in a clinical type of environment. You could have been startled, or having a weird dream or something. Don't worry though. I'm pretty sure it's not uncommon.

MOST people come out of anesthesia very calmly. A very few will cry, or laugh, or swear, or become agitated.

It's hard to give a good explanation without knowing what you got for the anesthesia. Sometimes, when people are disoriented, they struggle physically as they are struggling mentally to get awake.

Let your anesthesiologist know about this if you need anesthesia in the future. It might also be a good idea to ask what drugs you received, so you can pass that information on as well. We like to be forewarned, so we can better take care of you.
