Wisdom teeth removal? How long will I hurt?

Question:
I'm having 2 removed Thursday?

How long will I likely be in pain?

How long till I can eat normally again?

I know it varies, but any information would be great.

I had all 4 of mine removed last year and i didn't use any of the pain killers i just took 4 ibuprofen twice a day if i needed them..it didn't hurt that bad..and 3 days afterwards i was eating hamburgers and things again..just had to be carful how i was chewing it i could only use my front teeth for a while and make sure you don't drink through a straw for at least 2 months you don't want dry sockets i heard those hurt like crazy..
Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years. This all depends of whether they are partially impacted or fully impacted. Expect 3-5 days the first 2 days being the worse. First and foremost, don't panic or angst. It will hurt more. If you are having the lower ones done, have lots of ice packs in the freezer. After surgery take the pain meds and apply ice 20 minutes on, 40 minutes off. Do not suck or draw on a straw or anything else. This will dislodge the blood clot and cause a very painful dry socket. You teeth can bleed up to 5-6 hours after. That is fine. Sleep with a extra pillow to reduce swelling and eat ice cream to coat tummy and remove dried blood from mouth. DO NOT chew anything. Soft cool food only. After 24 hours begin warm salty rinses. 3-5 times a day. The more the better...but gently!! This will promote healing and remove any food from surgical site. After 3 days you can rinse for 2-3 times and begin to eat more normal. BUT no pizza, bagels, chew or sticky for 1 week. If the sutures fall out, don't panic, mine always do after 3-4 days. Next, no lifting, pushing or pulling over 10 pounds for 3-5 days. This could cause swelling or trauma to the jaw. DO not clench or grind. Relax and take it easy and do not plan anything for 2 days except to sleep, watch TV and rest. If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie
First, good call on getting it done! I had all mine removed (age 24, 2 were impacted). It will take between 1 week and two weeks to heal where you don't feel any pain anymore. You will still probably have bone shards come up (this is kinda freaky, but little splinters of bone actually come up through your gums). The healing time really depends on how good your surgeon is. If you don't have a butcher, then you should be completely healed in two weeks. Make sure that you pick up some of those aqua jet thingees so that you can rinse out the holes (food, especially rice and chicken will get caught in the holes). Ensure and other shake type drinks are a good option for the first two-threee days.
I had my removed while I was in high school..about 20+ years ago, but I remember it hurt a day or so after but nothing I couldn't deal with...I ate normally in about 3 days...but take it easy until you know what you can do! Good luck!
in general it's usually a quick recovery. as long as you follow the directions they give you, you should be fine by the end of the weekend. if your wisdom teeth have already errupted you might have a slightly longer healing time, and you're more likely to get dry socket (when the blood clot from the extraction becomes dislodged). that's where the real pain is, which is why it's important not to drink through straws, smoke, avoid carbonated bev.'s, etc. i was able to eat normally a few days after my surgery, i was just very careful to keep my mouth clean. the pain medication they give you should be plenty to keep you from feeling more than slight discomfort through the whole ordeal.
hope this helps, good luck!
Not long unless it is an impacted tooth. Even then with the right prescripted meds and pain killers you will be done in a few days.
I had mine out and my mouth felt better after the surgery then it did before,,,,but my wisdom teeth were badly infected,,,,For the pain to go away completely it took about 2-3 days. I was able to eat real food again around the same time. While your teeth hurt stay on a soft food diet.also the dentist should give you lots of pain pills...enjoy.
