What's known as "swallowing your tongue" is actually when your tongue rolls to the back of your throat and blocks the airway in which you breathe. This can happen when someone loses consciousness or has a seizure.
although you are not able to intentionally swallow your tounge it is possible if you are in enough pain to do so (hence why they used to gag people when they used the electric chair). if you were to swallow your own tongue you would choke on it suffocate and die because your tongue is wider than your esophagus.
