I was put under for oral surgery when i got all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted so i suggest oral surgery they did a great job!
If you have not gotten an xray it would be hard to choose bet. a dentist or an oral surgeon eventhough you are chicken its best to know the position of the teeth and the severity of impaction. A good dentist can give you a mandibular block anesthesia that will make half of your jaw feel no pain. If the teeth is really in a very bad position then i recommend that you get an oral surgeon to do this. cold compress after the surgery eases out the pain somehow.
Advantages to Dental Oral Sedation:
Easy to administer: Swallow a small pill
It is safe and easy to monitor
Works well for most people
Low Cost
Disadvantages of Dental Oral Sedation:
The level of Sedation is not easily changed
Someone must drive you to and from your dental appointment
There is no analgesic (pain relief effect)
I had my wisdom teeth (4) taken out by my dentist a couple years ago- one of which was sideways. No problems at all.. my cheeks were swollen just like my best friend who had hers done by an oral surgeon a few weeks before.. I didn't get dry sockets.. My dentist gave me a prescription for 1 sleeping pill to take 30 minutes before my appointment, so my mom drove me. I went in really groggy, they gave me laughing gas and all kinds of local anaesthesia.. I didn't feel a thing. The only bad thing- you're in and out through the whole thing- so when/if you wake up for a few seconds during it- you can hear whats going on. YOU CAN'T FEEL ANYTHING- but if you wake up, you will be able to hear what's going on- and it's kind of sick. I'm guessing that's one of the reasons for the sleeping pill. Also- so you'll sleep for a while afterwards when you're home. They had to help me to the car- I wasn't able to walk out on my own afterwards. Then you take your painkillers.
So- Pros: Faster, not knocked out with anaesthesia (much more dramatic and serious- some people can be allergic), same treatment. Probably cheaper- not sure I was in high school- parents paid. Cons: woke up for a few seconds a couple times during it and heard what sounded like a marble in a nutcracker.
I'd say go for it with an experienced dentist..
