What are my chances?

Question:
I had braces for 3 years. I really didnt like them at all. Well since moving in with my husband i had lost my retainer. My teeth on bottom shifted out well just one tooth moved out a little which made a gap on top. I found my retainer and put it in. It hurts really really bad but what are my chances of just wearing it day and night and only taking it out when i eat of them shifting back? Has anyone done this before? How long til it wasnt sore anymore? thanks for your answers:)

Answers:
It would really depend on how long you were without your retainer and how much movement has taken place. In most cases, the use of the retainer will make the teeth shift back if worn 24/7 with slight discomfort to the patient. It would be hard to say in your case without actually being able to examine you. You may be placing too much force on these teeth that have shifted. So I would suggest a quick trip to your orthodontist or dentist so they can evaluate this and get your teeth back into alignment without excessive pain or creating an additional tooth problem. I hope I've been of some help and good luck, hopefully the retainer will do the trick for you!
Just keep wearing it! They'll go back to where they were! =]
Sounds like you need to see your dentist again. You'll probably get a referral to see a periodontist. It's not a good thing for teeth to shift. Too much shifting or overbites can cause more pressure on other teeth because of the unevenness and eventually cause bone loss. You should ask your dentist and get the professional advice. If you don't take care of your teeth now, you will develop major problems in the future and it will be very costly and sometimes unpleasant. If the spacing on you teeth have changed and you've lost your retainer for a long time, you may need to have a new one made. Hopefully you have dental or periodontal insurance that will cover for this, if not all, then most of it would be nice because they're really expensive depending on where you have it made.
