I had a root canal done, I do not have a crown and it is hurting a lot is that normal?

Question:
I am in post with no crown and my tooth and gum are hurting a lot the doctor went on vacation :(

Answers:
Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years and this is NOT normal. Once the tooth has RCT it should stop hurting with-in a day or so. I think the problem here is an over zealous dentist that placed a post that may have fractured the floor of the tooth or perforated the root. Get to another dentist immediately for an Xray and a post removal if necessary. If your gum starts to swell an infection may present itself and you may need antibiotics. This is not something you wait on as I've seen this in the past and I'd rather you get to another dentist right away and know exactly what is going on then second guess on this site. This is when you need a hands on Expert to determine the exact nature of the problem and not a forum of guesses without seeing you in person. Please call a dentist this am and tell them you are in pain (key word) and be seen. All dentists have a covering doctor, I do. I would never leave my practice at any time unless I have another doctor covering for patients. Emergencies always happen when your away! If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie
Usually right after you get any sort of dental work done, your gums and teeth are going to be hurting because of all the drilling, needles, and tools/instruments jabbing at them... If I doesn't stop hurting in a day or two, then you should be concerned. In the mean time, pop some Advil or something...
He went on vacation and didn't put a temporary crown on it?! Does he have an associate in his office who can take care of this? There must be someone covering for him in the event of emergency. Find out who it is and go see that person. I've had enough root canals to know you shouldn't have that much pain.
Did they do a partial root canal ( where they leave it open to let infection drain out )?
I have had a couple root canals done where they had to do that but I have never had them leave any kind of post in my tooth or gum. It may be infected, try calling the dentists office, they will probably have an answering service available, ask them what you can do.
Yes Be patient. If you had the root canal less than two days ago, you are still healing. If within the next couple days it doesn't change or get worse, then call your doctor. Take some IB profen, it will help with any inflammation.
The tooth may be fractured. Even if your dentist is on vacation he will have someone covering for him, call the office and find out who is covering, if you don't care for the dentist he has chosen to cover for him ask a trusted friend who they go to and get in ASAP. It is better to at least have someone look at it than wait until your regular dentist gets back from vacation. Yes, it could be just part of the healing process, but don't take the chance.

If you had a root canal... that means they took out the nerves in the root.. go back to him.. he may have left some so called roots behind.
Very hard to fix.. they say Root Canal I say rip it out! its 100 dollar to rip it out, its 1000 dollar for root canal and most of the time after 1 year they rip it out so pay 100 or 1100 its up to you... thats my experience... they are human they make error also. Salam
this is completly normal i had a root canal done & i had a 'temp crown' for 2 months it was hell best thing to do is to make an apointment & get the perm. crown.
