What is a root canal?

Question:
and why do some people have to undergo it

Answers:
Don't listen to what people say - we're no longer in the stoneage. It doesn't hurt. I had one done myself. It took a while, but I did not feel a THING - neither before nor after the treatment. My dentist is amazing.
its a really bad cavity, and when it done they pull the nerve out
When a dentist drills out the nerve of a tooth, b/c it is either infected or dead. Such as a cavity going to long unchecked.
lolits the root a canal follows. na its a painful dental treatment.
A root canal is the drilling into and filling of the tooth root. Some folks have to get one because the root of the tooth has been infected by a cavity.

Sometimes a cavity in a tooth leads to an infection or abcess in the root.

To cure the infection, the dentist drills into the tooth and, when he/she reaches the root, uses a tiny scraper to clean out the inside.

The tooth is packed with some medicine and a temporary filling is installed. After the tooth has healed, the temporary filling is replaced with a permanent one. Usually the tooth also gets a crown or "cap" because root canals weaken it.
ive had two done to m they cut open my gums and mess with the nerves of ur tooth. it hurts like hell really
A root canal is a procedure that is done when a cavity has gone all the way into the pulp, or the nerve of the rooth.

They basically take out all the pulp in the tooth to remove the decay.
A root canal is an attempt to save a compromised tooth. They are usually done when decay has gone deep into the tooth and it can't be restored by just placing a filling. Sometimes, an infection gets into the nerve chamber of the tooth and causes swelling and pain.

A dentist will open the tooth, drain out any infection, clean out the canal(s) of the tooth and fill them with a sealing material so no more infection can get in.

After the blood supply is gone, the tooth should be secured with a full coverage crown. Otherwise, it will become brittle and can break.
Its to prevent permanent teeth from falling. The Dentist goes into the back of the tooth and removes the root. Some how some way it stays in place without falling out. I had done.
Root canal treatment/therapy, also known as Endodontic treatment is used to save tooth that has been damaged (often from a deep cavity or an injury that causes the tooth to crack) and the inside of the tooth becomes infected. This infection damages the pulp of the tooth-a soft tissue that contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue.

The pulp lies within the tooth and extends to the crown of the tooth to the tip of the root in the bone of the jaws.

Left untreated, the damaged pulp can cause infection that will damage the bone around the tooth and cause swelling and pain. If the damaged tooth becomes infected, your
dentist, or a dental specialist called an Endodontist, may have to perform an endodontic treatment (often called Root Canal Treatment) to save it- procedure is an alternative to
tooth extraction.
I had two done yesterday in less than 60 mins because I fractured my teeth when I was little, and an infection developed, which is called a tooth abscess. That was the worst pain ever. Only solution was root canal. Don't let anyone scare you, it doesn't hurt at all, just the little pinch of the novocaine shot. If you need one, better to get it over with as soon as possible. It's a walk in the park. Good luck!
I Had 4 root canals myself, I had a dentist that knew what she was doing...the only thing that I can say it did hurt were the novicane shots..the actual process was just long that i fell asleep.

in my experience..the dentist will remove all the nerves and fill it.

But According to the American Dental Association:

Once upon a time, if you had a tooth with a diseased nerve, you'd probably lose that tooth. Today, with a special dental procedure called a root canal therapy you may save that tooth. Inside each tooth is the pulp which provides nutrients and nerves to the tooth, it runs like a thread down through the root. When the pulp is diseased or injured, the pulp tissue dies. If you don't remove it, your tooth gets infected and you could lose it. After the dentist removes the pulp, the root canal is cleaned and sealed off to protect it. Then your dentist places a crown over the tooth to help make it stronger.

Most of the time, a root canal is a relatively simple procedure with little or no discomfort involving one to three visits. Best of all, it can save your tooth and your smile!
A root canal is a procedure is when the nerve inside the tooth is removed and a putty like material is put in its place. Usually it is done because injury or infection has damaged the nerve and someone is in pain. I have seen cases where a root canal was needed and the patient was totally unaware (had no pain) but the infection showed up on their Xrays. Any infection of this sort will not go away and needs to be treated so bone damage in the area does not take place. If a tooth has a root canal it there is a good likelyhood that you will have it for years to come, though a crown (covering) for the tooth will be recommended as the tooth will become more brittle due to the lack of nerve. Good luck!
