Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years and have 11 implants. Yes, I do. The gums don't hurt, the bone does. Take your pain meds and rinse with very salty warm water. This reduces swelling and heals. Watch what you eat. Nothing chewy, spicy or hot. Be gentle. This does hurt, but I promise it is worth it. One of my friends had 6 lower implants and cried for 3 weeks. Now 2 years later she loves it. So please bare with it. Percosette will help and don't chew on the area. If you need more meds ask. Everyone had a different pain level of tolerance. Don't try to be a hero, take the meds. I had to take 10 mg percosette with the last implant because I needed a sinus lift. Call you Dr and get any help you need. It is worth it! Good luck and if you have any other questions, please ask for me. Marie.
The gums probably went into shock or are bruised. Rinse with warm salt water to make sure there is no infection. It should get better over time...but if you notice no improvement within a few more weeks, go back to the dentist to report the problem.
If your gums are not firm (or firming up after the operation), consider an oral irrigator (waterpik) to help stimulate the gums to better health and firmness. Also be sure your toothbrush bristle is soft or medium...definitely not hard.
If you have a slow healing bruise on your gum, get more riboflavins into your diet (citrus fruits). Bruises that heal too slowly are usually caused by riboflavin deficiency.
I too had two dental implants on the top jaw - and after surgery my gums were killing me. Felt like I have been punched in the face. I used cold ice paks - which helped with bruising, but I am swollen inside my top lip. I was prescribed panadol forte which helped with the pain.. Now just taking normal panadol and ibrufren
Hope this helps - good luck
