Went to the dentist for a root canal and now I have a tight jaw I could only open my mouth 4 a straw?

This could be infection related, but it could also be related to the injection that was given. Sometimes a nerve or blood vessel can be traumatized, it sounds to me like a condition caused trismus. It could also be related to your TMJ, or temperomandibular joint, but I would speak to the dentist again about your symptoms or consider getting a second opinion.
Hope you are better soon!

Seems to me you need a second opinion. What you're describing to me sounds like what I have...TMJ that is when your jaw is out of alignment and if you chew on hard or tough foods or open your jaw too wide (without learning how to properly open it w/ TMJ) you will get Lock Jaw. You need a second opinion now!
You have TMJ and you need to go back to see your dentist because you need to have a night guard made to sleep in and if you are still having that much pain and you can't open your mouth wider than that then your jaw could be dislocated and you would need to have surgery to fix that. This happened to a co-worker of mine and it was very painful.
