Can i perform root canal therapy to a contolled compromise patient without asking for a referral from his doc

Question:
my patient came to me requestinfg for root canal. she said she had congenital heart disease and that her medical doctor advised her to take antibiotic prophylaxis everytime she visits her dentist for any invasive procedures. should i thrive to her words or should i asked for referral letter still?

Answers:
the USA guidelines have just changed and Any heart patients that have an appliance placed outside of the heart are okay to no longer PreMedicate. The heart patients that have an internal mechanism inside their heart do need to PreMedicate.

The orthopedic society group still require that all joint replacement patients have PreMedication before dental procedures.

If your patient is feeling she should continue the PreMed --there is no harm in allowing her to take her Premedication, however, much of what was thought to be true about PreMed has completely gone out of date.

I wanted to share with you our report from our dental website but --Sorry the link is closed---go to YOUR dental community website and locate the November document that reflects the most recent updates on Premedicating your patients.
Ask for a reffereal letter better safe than sorry!
In this day and age...I'd get the letter (documentation)! You can't be too safe these days.
