Getting braces in 2 1/2 weeks, and scared!!?

Question:
Okay, so like 3 days before school starts up again, im getting braces on my top teeth and im nervous!! does it hurt when they put them on?? how long does it take to adjust to them?? and how long does the process take?

Answers:
dont be scared!! when they are physically putting them on it doesnt hurt at all and its not scary at all. it takes maybe 45min to an hour to get them on. they clean the teeth, then individually glue each bracket on, and then insert the wire and put on all the rubber bands to keep the wire in place. the rubber bands also make it a little smoother on your lips. and then after a few hours your teeth will probably start hurting and the inside of your lips will probably get cut up from the braces. eventually they get used to the braces though and it only lasts a few days. take some advil and eat soft foods to help the tooth pain. they might give you numbing gel, otherwise go buy some oragel(sp?) and put that on often. if they give you wax use it to cover the braces that are cutting your lips up. it will give your lips a chance to heal. youre gonna want chapstick too!! when you get them adjusted it might hurt for a day or two but not that bad. it usually takes 5-20 minutes to adjust them, depending if they are just replacing the rubber bands, are tightening them, or are replacing the wire. the pain [when you first get them on] will probably last 3-4 days. i know it sounds really scary and painful but really its not and its going to be all worth it when you get your braces off to reveal your beautiful new smile!! and it doesnt even hurt getting them off either =] i had my braces for 18 months. some people have them on for 2 1/2 years (thats rare though). your orthodontist will probably tell you how long you will have them. if he doesnt, just ask!

i really hope this helped!!
good luck!
okay, the easy answer to your question is no, they don't hurt right away when they put them on. you will feel some pressure on your teeth, and it may ache a bit later. when that happens, you want to do a saltwater rinse to bring down swelling and give your teeth more room to move, putting less strain on the gums. also, you can take some ibuprofen to knock out the pain.

the other thing you want to look out for is the brackets scraping the insides of your gums. use the wax that they give you until the skin inside toughens up, or you could be very uncomfortable.

usually, adjustments take about a half hour, while they change your rubber bands and wire, and put it all back together. it's usually a pretty painless process.

finally, the whole process depends greatly on the state of your teeth. mine took me about two years to get the whole thing over with. however, i know people who were done in six months, so it really all depends.

good luck and i hope everything works out!
Braces can leave you in pain for a few days, but this is not major pain. It will take a few hours, they have to clean your teeth, then one by one put on the braces, let the glue dry then wire it. You will feel pressure on your teeth. They will give you wax, at first it will run on your gums and lips and it wont feel good, so put the wax on. The wax is safe to swallow, just dont eat the whole box. Brushing is a pain because you have to brush between each bracket, and flossing takes longer. Braces do not look so bad once you actually get them, and in the end your teeth will look better than ever.
no it doesn't hurt when they put them on but afterwords they kill for a day or 2. after that they're pretty much fine until you get them tightened that don't hurt nearly as bad as the second day you have your braces = ]]
I have braces right now and I was pretty scared to get them on too. It's uncomfortable to get them on, but not painful. The worst part for me was that they have to dry out your mouth and put things in to keep your mouth open, but none of this was painful. Normally it can start hurting a bit after the braces are on, but if you take a ibuprofen and eat soft foods until you get used to them you'll be fine. After a little while you'll be completely used to them. Also, if any part of the braces rubs against you're cheeks or lips just put a little bit of wax on and you'll be fine.
Good luck.
I'm getting braces too and i read a lot of things about them so I can answer your questions. It only hurts when you get them adjusted and like a day or two after you get them on. I would think that it would take about 30 minutes to adjust them. The process takes around three minutes.
Ok it doesnt hurt @ all!! 4 me its abt 20 mins 2 adjust them every other month but wen u 1st get adjusted your teeth will just be sore but just take sum advil 4 d@ an you be fine an then u will get use 2 gettin their adjusted your teeth wont be sore anymore
hey Even am putting on braces. nothing to get scared. no it does not hurt much. u have to put them on regularly. if it is permanent then no probs. they put it first by putting injection to... for
temporary they first take the shape of the gums and teeth by an
instrument and then they make the braces according to that and put it. no pain no gain. to adjust gotta go to the dentist once in 3 weeks. the process takes a year or so.

PS: No need to worry no pain no gain
It doesn't hurt at all (only when they tighten them) you should be fine. I'll have my braces on for a year in December. It doesn't take long at all to adjust them, on the other hand it takes a while to get them on but dont worry!
it doesn't hurt one bit it feels funny though & it takes for ever but no pain they clean your teeth & then press gently on the bracket it will be fine & when you are i nthe chair just tell them up front 'im super scared about this can you give me a run down on whats going on?' thats what i did
good luck & no worries
