Why do people smell their Tonsiliths?

Question:
Tonsiliths are little whitish/yellowish stones/balls that form and build up in the crevice of your tonsil, you dont notice them until they get substantially big enough for you to feel them in the back of your throat.

Some people like me cough them up every once a month, and for some strange reason every article about tonsiliths has something about odor. Its like it human nature to smell these things?

I am asking "Why do people smell their Tonsiliths?", because if it was just some uneaten dorito chip, i would stick it back into my mouth without second thought =)

Well I hope someone has researched if it is human nature to smell these little stinky balls. Thanks
