Is anybody else totally allergic to local anaesthetic?
I can't use local anaesthetic - my allergist says. How do you bar it?
Answers: There has never be a documented case of a true allergy to PLAIN local anaesthetic alone e.g. lidocaine, mepivicaine, prilocaine.
However, here are other ingredients within the solution which may trigger allergic reaction.
In all dental cartridges containing adrenaline (epinephrine), near is an antioxidant called sodium bisulfite which can trigger reaction.
Dental LA comes in single use cartridges. Medical doctors may use mutli-use ampoules, and these contain a preservative call methhydroxybenzoate to which some people may be allergic.
Another allergen, methyl paraben, is no longer used surrounded by US, UK or Australian LAs.
So, your allergist needs to exam you with a PLAIN LA (no adrenaline) from a SINGLE use tape (dental) to fully assess you.
There are a few dental cartridges you could use, the most common individual mepivicaine plain 3%, prilocaine plain 4%, or lidocaine plain 2%. These are all available from dental suppliers surrounded by the US. I'm sure you'll find these will be OK for you.
