Jaw pain three weeks after root canal?

Question:
I had a root canal over three weeks ago- it was awful because they couldn't get me numb. They said the root was alive but diseased so it was hard to numb. Anyway three weeks later and I still can't open my mouth all the way. Is this normal?!

Answers:
I also had a TWO root canals last week and my jaw is fine. Call your dentist... you'll feel better after you let him know about your pain, and he will explain why.
Was the tooth treated a lower tooth or one further back? If so, the infection/injury in the area can cause the muscles to spasm and lock (called trismus). This may be a side-effect when giving a local anaesthetic for a lower tooth. It usually subsides after a few weeks but my advice would be to let your dentist know so they can make a note of it and monitor the situation for you...
