Follow up - did I make the right choice?
So, the last time I wrote on here, (last week) I was debating whether to pull my second to last molar or having the root canal, post and crown done (cost about 3,500). I decided not to pull the tooth, to spend the money and get the work done.
Today, when he started the work on my broken-in-half tooth, he told me that the root was not exposed. he said I had a choice. I could do the procedure we discussed, or I could take a chance by having an indirect core build up and use a gold tooth-thing (I don't remember the technical name for it). He told me that there was a chance the procedure wouldn't work and that we may have to do a root canal if it didn't work.
Because I figured keeping the root in the tooth and being conservative was a good idea I took the chance. He also recommended it. Should I have had the root canal and post and crown instead? Also, what exactly happens if this does fail? Any dentists that can give me their input would be greatly appreciated.
Is my dentist blind? What can I do!?

I'm glad the pulp of the tooth wasn't exposed and you have a good dentist who is conservative. Root canal treatments are NOT guaranteed to work [about 95% success] so they are really the last resort after everything else. A gold restoration is the standard by which all other crowns are judged as they are the best that can be done. Most all dentists use gold in their mouths where esthetics aren't a major concern...soooo, in my opinion, you and your doc made the right and the best decision.
Just get the tooth PULLED!
Just call it a day, get it out before you get an infection.
Due to radiation treatments, several of my teeth just fell apart, just get rid of the teeth, in the long run you wont regret it.
If I am claiming job seekers allowance can I get my teeth straightened for free at my dentist?
Hi,
Your decision seems absolutely fine.
It is worth a try, before going ahead with root canal treatment.
However, one slight concern - gold restoration! I am assuming you are having a gold inlay. Did you not get the option of porcelain? Or did you choose gold?
I, personally, dislike gold restorations as I prefer an all-round white smile, even if there are a few white restorations, but that is just me, and the choice is entirely yours.
If this procedure does fail, then simply have the root canal treatment or opt for it to be extracted.
I, personally, would go for the option you have already chosen.
Keep smiling,
IC.
If this does fail then you will need to go ahead with the root canal, post, and crown. If you start having a throbbing pain, the tooth hurts to the point that it keeps you awake or wakes you up, or it is sensitive to hot and cold then you will know that it is time to have the root canal done. These are all signs of the nerve of the tooth getting infected and needing the root canal. You made the right choice in saving your tooth. When you remove a tooth the other teeth shift and move into the space so your teeth end up with gaps. Good Luck and I hope that you don't have to continue with all of the other treatments.
