I just got my wisdom teeth out. What foods are the best to eat, and what should I avoid?

Question:
Besides the obvious ones like hard foods or things with seeds.. anyting anyone had a problem with or found helped? Also any tips on preventing infection/dry sockets? Thanks!

Answers:
Applesauce, yogurt, smoothies today. Nothing hot, no straws or rinsing today. Smoking and being on birth control are two of the biggest causes for dry sockets...symptoms of dry sockets usually start about 2-3 days after the extraction, it feels like surgical pain is increasing instead of decreasing. Aching, throbbing, ear ache-like. Your surgeon can place a dressing (looks like fettuccine!) inside the socket, it insulates and soothes while your natural tissue grows over the bone. You'll heal faster without the dressing, but most people want the immediate relief.
Post op infection usually occurs because of food getting stuck in the lower sockets. Hopefully you'll be given a home irrigating syringe to flush out the crud.
Hot Dogs were great for me, I just couldn't take giant bites of them for a while.
When i got mine removed I ate pizza the same day. It wasn't that bad at all
Don't drink for a few days at least. Avoid spicy foods or anything that is not soft.

Recovery may vary sometimes you can almost fully recover over a day or so or it can takes up to 2 weeks if a infection occurs.
hahha
DO NOT use straws!! The suction can add to the dry sockets and can harm the stitches.

Cold food, like ice cream, can numb the area. My boyfriend had them out two summers ago. He lived on pudding, soup, and ice cream. haha.

good luck!! =)
Do not use a straw it will cause a dry socket and that is very very bad and painful. Do not suck in that is bad for you also.

Ice cream is OK yogurt mashed potato's are good. Don't have anything to hot tho that's not good for you either.
Try eating soup or other soft foods like mash potatoes, don't use straws. Sucking a straw can cause the blood clots to come out and cause a dry socket. I was better after about 3 days but still don;t use a straw for at least a week or so.
drink soups right now don't take any chances of them becoming a dry socket.they hurt like (you don't want to know).I heard that dry sockets were brought on by drinking from straws or smoking cigarettes. My doctor prescribed some antibiotics when I had mine pulled.

(Many blessings)
hi there, avoid milk and dairy products, because they can get those areas infected.
Please make sure you rinse your mouth with warm, salty water to clean your mouth to avoid infections.

Good luck...
6-7 days and you should be ok...

The classic recommendation is to eat ice cream. You are entitled to the reward and the cold helps with the swelling. You can eat anything you feel like eating, but that will most likely be soft things. Soup, mashed potatoes, etc. You will likely get recommendations to avoid spicy foods and avoid drinking with a straw. There is not much evidence to back these up. Do not swish liquids around vigorously, this might dislodge the clot. You seem to have good sense about this already. Good Luck.
