What's an expander ( for braces)?

Question:
What is it, where do they put it in your mouth and will it effect my speech and how long do i have to wear it?

Answers:
i had expanders and they sucked! i had to wear mine for 6 months, i just got them off in February. at first it really affected my speech but, after a few weeks, it got alittle better but, i still couldn't pronounce certain things. it made a gap in between my front two teeth but, after a few weeks (about a month) it came closer and closer. i had to get expanders to fix my jaw, bite and for the fact i am gettin braces. its about a few centimeters from the roof of ur mouth, its really hard to eat, u feel like ur chokin and some people feel like they have to throw it but, after awhile u learn how to eat a certain way. expanders work different ways for different people, ur speech may not be affected like me and u may wear it longer or shorter then others. its hard at first but, u'll get through it. i feel ur pain, good luck!!
Should look on google it is very helpful lol just want the 2 points!
They put it in the roof of your mouth to spread it out if you have crowding. Your speech will seem different at first but it gets better the more you get used to it. I guess it depends on how crowded your mouth is. My son had one he had his on for a yr. Now my daughter has one & they said a yr for her also.
My sister is getting one. It is designed to expand your upper arch (your bite) and provide space for you upper adult teeth. Meaning that your teeth are too crowded on top so they are using the expander to expander your upper jaw so there is more room for your teeth to move in. For your speech, you will notice a short term change with your speech. Let your tongue get used to the expander and you will be speaking clearer. Hope this helps!! :)
yes expanders are put in before braces thats all i know though from my friends experiences. i think they put them in the back by your molers and they are there for yourbraces and people have told me that when you get your braces on its hard to talk and after you get used to them when there taken off you cant talk right either. and braces your orthadontist will tell you for how long you wear them.
the put it at the top of ur mouth if it is very crowed up there u will sound diffrent at first but then u will get used to it and not even notice
I just got mine today. It goes on the roof of your mouth.
You talk like you have peanut butter in your mouth. And it is so uncomfortable. Your mouth gets caught up with saliva so much, its disgusting. You need to turn it open with a tool. It attaches to your wisdom or molars or somthing. But they cement it there. It's hard to swallow and you feel like your gonna throw up. You know that feeling that when something accidentaly touches the back of your throat, adn it tingles, you'll feel that forever. You have to have it on for long, as far as I know. They might tell you something like, turn it once everyday for two weeks. THen they might change it or something. Some people have it for like a month, others for 8.
