Wisdom Teeth?
Question:
It might've been there longer than just today... but I'm not quite sure. It doesn't really affect me right now as I didn't even notice it until I was trying to get a piece of meat out of my teeth after eating dinner when I felt something hard with my tongue.
It doesn't seem to be fully grown in yet as I can only feel the outer tooth side and the inner side is still gums.
I wear retainers right now if that affects anything. Been wearing them for almost a year now I think... I wore braces for 2 years.
Since I read that some people can keep their wisdom teeth in if they grow correctly and don't affect the teeth... I'm just wondering if there's a sign that tells you that you have to pull it or not.
Answers:
Really it all depends on what your dentist thinks. Normally wisdom teeth are considered bad/weak teeth and a lot of people do get them pulled. I had them pulled when I had braces because it was affecting the alignment of my teeth. I would ask your dentist see what he/she thinks. But it all is up to you in the end. :)
I don't think you need to worry about them unless they cause problems. I wouldn't either since it is so expensive to get them out!
There is a sign and it is pain. If there is not enough room you will definately have problems. I went to a surgeon and he said my wisdom teeth were coming in straight but I still ended up in pain so there is no guarantee about a drs prediction. Most drs nowadays recommend getting them taken out before they start to give you problems. Especially if you are wearing braces now wisdom teeth coming in can cause unwanted movement and cause more problems. Your best bet is to talk to your dentist next time you go in. He knows your situation best.
only your dentist will know for sure, after they take x-rays. when i had mine done they discovered i only had 3 wisdom teeth but they were impacted(not growing through the gum) so had to be removed.
You need to talk to your dentist. They will remove them if they pose a threat to your other teeth. For instance if they are going to shift your other teeth together and some may buckle then they need to be removed. I had mine removed at an early stage. They had to make an incision in my gums to pull them.
Since you've had braces and a retainer I wouldn't waste any time getting in to see your dentist. Wouldn't want to mess up a good set of teeth.
You should have the wisdom teeth taken out. They are so far back so it is hard to keep them clean which makes it easier for them to get infected. Most people do not have a large enough mouth for them so they will cause your teeth to shift and move. Since you have already had braces and your teeth are nice and straight, you really don't want your wisdom teeth to come in and mess up your teeth.
I follow a normal rule of thumb when it comes to wisdom teeth. If you've had braces, get them out. Why risk the chance that they will crowd your teeth and make your teeth crooked. Also, since I'm a hygienist I know how hard it is to clean wisdom teeth. They normally are a problem source for gum disease later in your life. If a wisdom tooth does not come all the way in, definitely get them out. Bacteria will find their way down under the gum and the potential for decay is greater. If you were my child I would have your wisdom teeth out. Orthodontics is too expensive to do one time much less a second time.
You sound a lot how I was...I waited and they ended up coming in and hurting and so i took the bottoms out 2 yrs ago. And now my top teeth are hurting and I will have to get them out soon. The thing is is that they can get infected and that's not good, you will have to have oral surgey which is more expensive than the actual wisdom teeth removal. If i were you and to avoid problems down the way-get them all out !! ~Adia. I'm getting my tops out in like a week or so.
