Root canal worries!?

Question:
Hi Well i have been up for hours scared to death of a root canal this am. I am going to take triazalam 1 hr prior but is that enough? I am soooo scared of dental work! The app is 3 hrs why is it so long?

Answers:
LOL-trust me, a root canal is not as bad as it seems-trust me it's alot better than going through the pain of a toothache-REALLY! It takes so long because they have to first give you the topical anesthesia and let it set in, then the needle anesthesia(I swear thats the worst part of the root canal-but its over in like 5 seconds) They have to do xrays, you have to fill out more paperwork, and the actual root canal takes time and patience, but truly its very little pain-the most annoying part is waiting for the numbness to wear off after the surgery...I almost bit my lip off by mistake after I had mine...hope I helped-good luck!
No worries. You wont feel a thing these days. You might as well take a nap while they work for you.
I had a few and they are good for you
i remember when i needed root canal...and yeah i was terrified too.but honestly there's nothing to worry about.it probably won't take 3 hours at all but they have to say that to cover their own back.if they say 1hr,then it takes longer, other patients will miss their appointment and they will lose money.
there's absolutley nothing to worry about.all you will feel is a bit of proddin n probing but no pain.relax...you'll be fine
Okay, let me explain what the DDS will do. Apparently something is wrong with your nerves, it can be anything. So, he's going to drill a small hole in your tooth, and then he is going to pull out the nerves. This is going to remove all feeling from it. The then is going to fill the hole. I'm sure he's going to inject some lidocane into ya. If your dentist truly cares, he's not going to allow you to feel the procedure. Relax. When I sit with the dentist (right now I can only assist), I notice when he has people scheduled, they never last that actual amount of time. He wants to give leeway just in case. Most root canals last about an hour, hour in a half. It could depend on how decayed your tooth is, as well. But relax. You'll be fine. He'll probably give you a prescription for darvocet or vicodine.
No, 3 hours is not accurate, I had a root canal back when I was in my teen years and it was brutal back then, had to go back 3-4 times. But now they say it is in one sitting and not like it used to be.
I hate dentist too, I especially hate the Novocaine more than anything.
If you are having root canal on any single tooth, it is just one root and no biggie- if it is a molar, these have 2-3 roots and still no biggie just more to work on. But from what I understand it takes about an hour, hour and a half. Take an ipod or headset with you, relax you some. I have to go Friday morning at 7:20 in the morning!! I will take my xanax and my earphones with me and a nut cracker in case the dentists hurts me!! I will have perfect aim if he does! HA
Good luck- and believe me I know your fear- I just try to focus on getting it overwith and not having this hang over my head another day- relief that it is over.
Having a root canal done nowdays is just like having a filling done---it just takes a little longer. The appts take so long because the dentist needs to find and open the canal(s) of the tooth which are very small. They then need to removed the nerve and cleanse the canal(s) before they can be closed.

With taking the triazalam you'll probably end up napping and it will be done before you know it.
Holly I feel you! I was in your same situation this morning. I had two root canals done, in less than 40 mins! I also took triazolam, it just made me feel tired. The only thing you'll feel is the pinch of the novocaine shot, which lasts 4 secs!! After that.. nooothing. They told me I was going to take an hour and a half for the two root canals and olny took 40 mins. I stressed out way too much.. there is really nothing to it. You'll be glad when it's over though, it's never a fun day when you have to go to the dentist. Good luck, and take pain meds after!
