Orthodontic Work & Missing Teeth?
Question:
I can not find any information on the internet regarding why in some instances a person has the space closed and in others the space is opened for an implant.
I'd love to know what kind of circumstances each case works best. I really want to just get the space closed with orthodontic work and not have to have any implants or bridgework.
Can anyone give me any information?
Thank you!

Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years. If your lower jaw is smaller than the upper, the Ortho can pull the teeth together using the premolars to lock in the space. This is fine if it can be done. Implants are an option, but I would try pulling the teeth together first and make room for the 3rd molars and you are home free. I've had several patients without the incisors and was able to this. The baby tooth has to go to do this. Not an option.
If the space is so large that the Ortho can not pull it together, then implants are easy, but costly, but you have them for life. this is also an option to consider depending of you jaw size and bite. Which ever way it goes, you will have a great look, a wonderful smile and that is for life. So have a heart to heart with the Ortho and see what is the best option for you. If you have any other questions, please ask. M
