Can't open mouth after wisdom tooth extraction?

Question:
I am 13 and on monday had the bottom right wisdom tooth extracted and surgically removed. It is now Saturday and my mouth opening is very limited. It is a hassle trying to eat a piece of bread. Is this normal? I have a follow-up on Monday and don't think I will be able to open my mouth for the dentist. PLEASE HELP!!

Answers:
Hi! This is not uncommon because the tooth was surgically removed and may have required the Oral Surgeon to remove part of the bone (which will fill in) and pull on the jaw muscle. Apply ice and gently massage the area with your finger tips. You can also try warm compresses AFTER 24 hours if their is no swelling, but I prefer you continue with the ice packs. 20 minutes on at a time. Then you can try this. Gently try to yawn and drop your lower jaw. Massage the area behind the jaw bend for a few minutes VERY carefully. And in the area it does NOT hurt. This will help relax the muscles and make your feel better. I have had patients take a week or more before they could fully open their mouths after wisdom tooth extractions, so don't panic. See your dentist on Monday and you will be fine. If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie.
There are two reasons why you can't open your jaw... either local inflammation or infection affecting your biting muscles (massters), or there is a problem with your jaw joints (acute closed lock). Find out more at http://www.oceansurgical.com.au/...
