When you get braces do you have to keep your mouth open by yourself or do they put something to hold it open?

Question:
and does it hurt?

Answers:
They will put in plastic cheek expanders to hold things open and expose your teeth. Your lips will get very dry while they are putting your braces on with these things in so be sure to put on lots of chapstick just before you go in for your appointment.
It's called a bite block. Depending on how big/small your mouth is. Usually they'll use it and you can have a nap.
It's called a bite block and they come in child, med and adult. And yes it can be used and often used for patients who have TMJ problems or a small mouth or can't keep it open for that long. It's hard rubber and does not hurt.
