Which is worse a root canal or an extraction ?

I went through a root canal and it was miserable and took months to be finished and kept getting infected. Not sure why they want to save your wisdom teeth? I'm not a dentist but I had mine out when I was 20 and didn't have any problems then or now. Sure they're not just trying to suck your money? If you have great insurance they may recommend the most expensive thing they can think of. Best.
Root canal is worse. It ranks high among worst dental stuff to go through.
An extraction is just getting your teeth pulled. They give you novocaine and whatnot for that, and it'll hurt for a little while after. A root canal on the otherhand is them digging into your gums to extract the root of your tooth, where the infection is rotting away your mouth. They put you to sleep for that, but it hurts really bad for a couple days after...
It really depends on your pain tolerance... Neither one bothered me at all.. The thing about the root canal is that the tooth over time becomes brittle and break alot easier... I had root canals done when I was a kid and as a adult they would break so I ended up getting them pulled..
Root canal - god that hurt for a good 3 days even with pain killers! My root canal was done in the back of my mouth and it took a good 3 hours to complete..which means you have to sit there and listen to the drill and have cotton balls way in the back of your throat and a suction device in your mouth for 3 hours. Talk about MISERABLE. They put a porcelain crown on first but it cracked, so they had to go back in and now i have a gold crown. So I wouldn't waste my time on porcelain unless it's in a place in your mouth that you see.
both, the last time I went to the dentist was when I got my wisdom teeth removed, all four of them. don't worry they will put a lot of Anastasie. Goot Luck.
I don't know the qualifications or techniques of the dentists these people have been going to, but my root canal (on an upper back molar) was virtually painless, and hasn't bothered me since. That tooth had a hairline fracture in it and was causing me pain. It took just under an hour, and I haven't been back since. I chose that rather than having my tooth pulled, because it allows me to keep an important chewing tooth.
After administering the anesthetic and allowing time for it to "take", the center of the tooth is drilled out down to the ends of the roots. This effectively removes all the root tissue. Then the holes (because there are several roots) are cleaned and filled with an inert material, and a regular filling is placed on top of that. (A crown may be needed, but not always.) If the tooth is otherwise solidly set in the jawbone, it should last for many years. There may be a little soreness for a day or two, but it quickly goes away.
If you have the tooth pulled, the dentist will still use anesthetic, but afterwards you will have a raw hole in your jaw that has to be monitored and treated to prevent infection for about a week. (It will tend to collect food particles.) You've lost the use of that tooth for chewing forever, unless they can install an artificial tooth, which may require a bridge (at extra cost).
My recommendation is if you can afford the root canal and the tooth is a good candidate for the procedure, go for that.
Personally I don't think either one is that bad. I've had 4 root canals and had all 4 wisdom teeth removed. They took about the same amount of time. As long as you are numb you don't feel anything. With a root canal you feel some vibrations and some pushing and smell some strange things...With extractions you just feel a lot of pushing and pulling. which isn't that bad. With extaractions there is a longer healing period and you ahve to be careful about the things you do and take it easy. But either way they are not as bad as people say...Good Luck
