How do you get rid of canker sores? Are they contagious?

Question:
I've had it for two weeks and its getting on my nerves. The only thing that's recentely changed is my birth control I switched brands.

Answers:
when i get bad ones, the only 2 things that seems to help me is;

1. salt water

2. a 2:1mixture of mouthwash (Listerine) and peroxide.
DONT SWALLOW THIS MIXTURE!!

from what im told, they are contagious, like any form of hepatitis(more contagious when you have a breakout); however, anyone i have ever kissed either never got them, or gets very very small ones. (mine can get up to 1/2 cm diameter )
cancar sores are not contagious and and just rince with warm water and salt to get rid of it
From what I've learned they ARE very contagious and can be spread by sharing cups, uncleaned utensils, kissing, etc.

I use this "dental paste" that acts like a bandage inside the mouth, you apply it with a cotton swab and it becomes a thin film that heals the canker sore...Its called "Triamcinolone Acetonide Dental Paste"
well, there is really no way to get rid of them, but if you try abreva or abrev or whatever that brand is, that will work a little, now Canker sores are one virus that never goes away, so I wont guarantee that you wont get it again, also they ARE contagious, so NO kissing or anything...
Hi, i have had canker sores before and as im into aromatheraphy oils i found a great way into using these to get rid of them AND IT WORKS. Its also safe.

Go to your health store and buy pure essential oil of tea tree. It will come in a small dark brown bottle and they not exspensive.

When you get home, firstly rinse your mouth out with water and sea salt. Seasalt is a natrual antiseptic. Then mix 3 drops of tea tree into half a small cup of water. Wash the mixture around in your mouth for approx 1 minute and then spit it out. Do this twice daily (best time is just before bed).

OR

Mix 3 drops of tea tree to 1 tablespoon of carrier oil. (Carrier oil is also brought in health stores and also comes in a dark brown bottle) or alternativly use sunflower oil. Wash your hands and then dip your finger into the mixture and rub into the sores. You only need to rub in a very little bit.

Several herbs are useful in the treatment of cranker sores. Most of them contain tannins and have other wound healing properties. Tannin, the common name for tannic acid, is a constituent of many plants and gives foods an astringent taste. An antiseptic with broad-spectrum antibacterial and antiviral action, it's especially helpful for treating mouth sores, which could be caused by a bacterium, a fungus, a virus or an allergy.
Buy yourself either calendula herbs or goldenseal.
Pour a cup of boiling water over one to two teaspoons of the dried herb.
Let this mixture steep for ten minutes.
Strain it so that there is no herb left in the liquid.
Use this tea as a mouthwash three or four times daily.

OR TRY ANY OF THE FOLLOWING

Chamomile: Chamomile has a soothing effect on mucous membranes (including the lining of the mouth). It also has healing properties. A strong tea made from chamomile tincture can be swished in the mouth three to four times per day.

Sage: Many herbalists suggest making a strong sage tea to treat inflammations of the mouth and throat. To make this tea, use two teaspoons of dried herb per cup of boiling water. Let it steep until cool and then gargle with it.
CAUTION: You should not drink too much Sage tea. Sage contains a fair amount of thujone, a compound that in very high doses may cause convulsions if taken in excessive quantities.

Cankerroot (Coptis groenlandica) or goldthread. This plant got its name because of its traditional use as a treatment for canker sores. American Indians and early settlers alike used cankerroot as a tea to treat both sore throat and canker sores. They chewed raw root for canker sores and fever blisters.
