See especially the second source below...it addresses your problem specifically. The first source is a medical resource for various medical conditions including phobias. The second source will provide step by step methods of overcoming the fear associated with Dentists and Dentistry.

Get well soon!
Punch him in the crotch.
Yank out your teeth and there will be no more need to get your teeth checked out.

Besides, you'll be able to wear all kinds of kewl dentures.
Beer.
Go to the dentist.
Face your fear, it will get easier. I hate the dentist too, but it is necessary and there is no way around the fear accept to face it and master it. :) Good luck sweetie.
Face your Fear!

only way to over come it!
I've always been terrified of dentistry, so I solved the problem by going to a children's dentist. Yup - I'm often the only adult sitting in the waiting room, and I have to say I don't care - they do wonderful work, they're gentle and I wouldn't have it any other way. Try that, k?

And black - or mercury - fillings aren't good for you. I had mine removed because they can trigger problems with your immune system, among other things. I suggest that you, or anyone with mercury fillings, do the same.
Yes, they have mercury in them and they do not seal perfectly so you always get cavities under and next to amalgum fillings. Just tell your dentist you are scared. You will be surprised how helpful he can be.

Try to slow your breathing and close your eyes. This will help. Focus on something like your feet. Wiggle your toes, or count them by moving them. It will take your attention off of what is happening in your mouth.
Mind over matter buddy. I've had alot of fillings and when I go I just think about anything else but what is going on. I don't look at any of the instruments of anything else I just kind of let my mind go into a state of nirvana. Oh yeah and also a trick i do is rub on some ambesol just before going in so you don't really feel the novacaine shot. One more thing tell him to give you extra novacaine it doesn't cost any more and you won't feel anything.
impossible the dentist sucks. the first thing he does is pull out that razor sharp pic.aaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Try what i did - don't go to the dentist and, after 16 years, when you can't take any more aspirin and you can't sleep because of the pain ...

I went to a dentist who specialized in dentophobes, had intravenous Valium and floated home and woke up feeling 3000% better.

I now go regularly and don't have any fear at all.
Sugar, dark fillings are just unpolished amalgum . As the dentist and he/she can polish it so it won't darken. What you were told is an old wives tale at best. Amalgums always are dark unless polished.

Let me tell you a story about my first remembered trip to a dentist. As a very very young, less that four years old I developed 5 abcesses. That is infection on the root of the tooth. Which makes it necessary to remove them. And they are impossible to numb. The first dentist my parents to me too, had his asisstant hold my legs and feet to keep me from kicking when he pulled that first tooth. I vividly remember the day and that women holding my feet and legs and the pain of that tooth being pulled. After that first tooth my parents would not allow him to pull the rest of the teeth. My mother took me to an oral surgeon who sedated me to pull the remaining four teeth.

The next time I was taken to a dentist was about a year later. This dentist was to remain my dentist for the next 20 years But he was always kind gentle .

Dentistry does not have to be fearful. Explain your fears to your dentist and I am sure they will work around them. And you you get over the fear.
I am sorry, but I don't know if you can get over that fear. I still grip onto the chair handles. Hopefully you will get better ideas from the other answerers. The only other thing that I can suggest is bring some music (headphones) of music that will calm you. And for the fillings I think you can get numbed for that. I hope this helps!! :)
yes you can talk to your denist about your fear and he or she will tell you about what will be done.
what do you mean by black fillings? i think you can get white fillings now.

anyways i hate going to the dentist too! i try to think of what would happen if i DIDNT go, etc. and all the health problems and how lucky we are to be able to go, and plan a fun activity (i love shopping) after.

good luck!
