Black spot on 20 month old daughter's gums?

Question:
About 2 weeks ago my daughter bumped her mouth pretty hard on the toilet...(trying to potty by herself) and almost bit through her bottom lip. It has healed completely, but recently I've noticed a black spot on her gum almost immediately behind her front tooth. At first I thought it was food or something, but we can't seem to brush it out. Would her hitting her mouth her mouth have caused this...it looks like it may be getting smaller, but it's really hard to get a good look at it since she's not the biggest fan of me holding her back to look in her mouth. Suggestions?

Answers:
It is possible that she has damaged her deciduous tooth with the fall. Usually when this type of accident happens, the tooth will sustain a blow that causes the ultimate death of the nerve in the tooth. You may notice the tooth darkening, becoming loose or a fistula or dark spot on the gums.

There is no way of knowing without a proper exam from your dentist.

The tooth however does need to remain in this space for many years not just for the obvious reasons of eating, but also to work as a space maintainer and guide for her permanent tooth with has not developed as of yet.

It would be best to take her to your dentist for an evaluation to determine what treatment may or may not be needed. If the nerve has been effected it may require a baby pulpotomy to be done, this is similar to a root canal. It will keep the tooth in it's place and keep your daughter from experiencing pain from an abscess.

Good luck and I hope I've been of some help.
