I got my retainer two weeks ago..?
Question:
I see plaque and stuff everywhere, it's sort of gross. I'm scared because I just got it two weeks ago and it's already spoiling! I use a toothbrush and I clean it with handsoap everyday, but the plaque and stuff doesn't go away.
How do I clean it and make sure the plaque and stuff on my retainer goes away? WILL it go away? Would I have to buy a new one? Please help, thanks!

Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years and this is what you do. Remove the retainers and gently with a soft brush clean with toothpaste all over. Rinse. Now brush your teeth and floss and that includes you tongue. A large amount of plaque can build up on your tongue. Then 2-3 times a week, buy an tablet denture cleaner that dissolves in water. Soak both retainers for 20 minutes or more. RINSE before putting back in your mouth. This should do it and you will have fresher breath and a great smile to match!! If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie
I have had the clear plastic retainers for 3 years. What you are seeing in not plaque but just pressure points on the plastic from your teeth. I clean my each night with brush and toothpaste and sometimes soak them in mouthwash. My upper one wore through and the orthodontist replaced it free of charge. Quit worrying, sounds completely normal.
I am an orthodontic nurse and we recommend brushing your reetainer every morning with COLD water and a small bit of toothpaste.Leave the retainer to dry in the open air so it doesnt smell. Maybe let it soak in water with a drop of Milton(baby bottle cleaner) once a week
