How does chewing gum help protect teeth?

Question:
On the box of Trident, it says 4 out of 5 dentists would recommend Trident to their patients. What mechanism is in gum that helps it protect teeth?

Answers:
ok, it's mainly a mechanical way as the gum is sticky it sticks to food debris on ur teeth so prevent caries initiation.2- trident gums neutralize the ph in ur mouth so that only normal oral bacterial flora survive and be in moderate quantity.3- gums in general protect TMJ the joint of your mandible and chewing it self prevent excess wax being stagned in ur ear
it is strengthen the teeth.
There isn't anything special. Its a carry over from a study that was done when trident was about the only sugarless gum on the market.

I believe the original poll question to the dentists was something like... "if a patient was going to chew gum, which gum would you recommend..." Then they get a list of possibilities, one of which was sugarfree trident. Starting to get the picture now?

I doubt they would get such an endorsement today when you can find umpteen different sugarless gums. But they continue the claim from the 1970's.
