Are there any dentists on here? Question on different types of flouride treatments:?

Question:
My old dentist used foam fluoride treatments with the mouthguard trays. My new one painted a varnish on my teeth. I am worried that the varnish won't reach the areas between the teeth where I usually get cavities. How do different types of fluoride treatment compare? Pros and cons?

Answers:
Unless you have pretty large spaces between your teeth, the foam fluoride isn't going to go in there. There isn't much of a difference otherwise if the person doing the painting is diligent and hits all of the surfaces. My main concern with the paint on is that some surfaces are missed [like in by your tongue]. I think some docs are using the paint on because it's faster. You might ask yours if they do have the foam.
The foam and mouth guard way works. But for lots of patients it was very uncomfortable.
Your concerns are well founded about the paint on method. It is very dependent on a diligent operator. It can be just as good.
