What percent should your overbite be and how many mm. should an overjet be?

Question:
My orthodontist says that I have a Class 1 malocclusion, an overjet of 4 mm., and an overbite of 30%. Can someone please explain to me what the averages are for an overbite and overjet.

Answers:
Averages are different than ideal. Ideally your overbite and overjet should be 1-2 mm each. (30% is about 3-4mm) Class 1 is good because that means your molars are hitting in a good position. This is easiest when it comes to correction because your jaw is not too far forward or too far back. As far as what the averages are.no idea. I do know that Class I is most common though.
